Standard drywall comes in 4' by 8' sheets although 4' by 12' sheets are also available. I would recommend sticking with 4' by 8' sheets since one person can work with these a lot easier. The 4' by 12' sheets are simply "beasts" to move around!

The common thickness of drywall is 1/2" or 5/8". 1/2" is usually used on walls and 5/8" is used on ceilings for 24 inch on center studs. Always check your local building codes!

There is standard drywall, and what is commonly called "green board". The "green" drywall is more moisture resistant and should be used in bathrooms and areas of moisture. There is also a brand new mold-resistant drywall that will hit the market soon.

For bathtub areas don't use drywall! Instead use a concrete-based "rock board" with ceramic tile installed over. The same goes for kitchen sink areas. You may, however, apply tile to primed drywall in non-moisture areas.
